Ground Breaking Ceremony for the Colonial Beach Torrey Smith Recreation Center
November 17, 2018
Torrey Smith, Professional NFL Foot Ball Player, currently the Wide Receiver for the Carolina Panthers has generously offered to donate almost $200,000.00 towards the construction of the Recreation Center.
Smith, who is a two-time Super Bowl Champion, got his start playing football in Colonial Beach under Coach Steve Swope, so he wanted to give back to the community where he grew up.
Steve Swope has worked tirelessly raising funds to add to Smith’s generous donation.
The town of Colonial Beach celebrated the start of the first phase of construction with an official Ground Breaking Ceremony on November 17, 2018.
A large crowd of citizens gathered with several key members of the community including the mayor, council members and the town manager on this very cold morning.
Torrey Smith could not make it to the ceremony but his mother Monica Dontae Richards was on hand to help with the celebration.
Colonial Beach Town Mayor Eddie Blunt thanked Torrey Smith for his donation, Coach Steve Swope for his fund-raising efforts and the citizens and businesses who have donated to the project.
Next to speak was Coach Steve Swope who thanked everyone for coming out, their generous donations and to discuss what the rec-center will do for the town.
Swope was sure to let folks know he enjoyed fund-raising but his efforts weren’t over, even giving a plug for next fund-raising activity that took place shortly after the ground breaking ceremony.
