King George Assault Suspect In Custody After Police Chase

Franklin C. Murphy of King George is currently being held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond. Murphy is facing charges of Attempted Abduction and Domestic Assault and Battery, according to a press release from Sgt. K. A. Wharton of the King George Sheriff’s Office.

More charges are being obtained against Murphy including Attempted Capital Murder, Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer, Felony Eluding, and Felony Destruction of Property.

The charges stem from an abduction incident at Petco that occurred yesterday, Jan 24 at approximately 2 p.m. and a police pursuit that resulted in a deputy being struck near Caledon Road.

Police are asking for the public’s assistance. Anyone with knowledge or who witnessed the following incident is asked to contact Sgt. K. A. Wharton at (540) 775-8498.

According to a press release from King George County Sheriff’s Office, on 01/24/19 at approx. 2pm, KGSO received a 911 call in reference to a male subject in the parking lot of Petco (Dahlgren area) who was seen assaulting a female and attempting to force her into a vehicle.

The female escaped from the male as deputies responded. The male suspect got into the vehicle and fled the scene. The suspect was identified as 21 yo. Franklin C. Murphy of King George. The female victim was the suspect’s girlfriend.

A short time later, Deputy James Simmons spotted the suspect’s vehicle on Caledon Rd. in King George County.

The suspect attempted to elude Deputy Simmons resulting in a vehicle pursuit. The suspect fled at a high rate of speed, crossing into oncoming traffic and turning on back roads in an attempt to evade deputy Simmons.

At one point during the pursuit, the suspect crashed into a ditch on Caledon Rd. Deputy Simmons exited his patrol vehicle attempting to take the suspect, Franklin C. Murphy, into custody.

Murphy struck Deputy Simmons with his vehicle and fled the scene. Deputy Simmons returned to his patrol vehicle and continued the pursuit.

Lt. Kevin Brandts had responded to the area to assist and observed Murphy pull onto a gravel road off Igo Rd. in King George. Murphy exited his vehicle and fled on foot. After a brief foot chase Lt. Brandts captured Murphy and took him into custody.

EMS responded to the scene where Deputy Simmons and Murphy were evaluated for injuries. Deputy Simmons was transported to Mary Washington Hospital where he was treated and released later that evening. Murphy was medically released at the scene and transported to the Sheriff’s Office.

Murphy was charged with Attempted Abduction and Domestic Assault and Battery. He is being held under no bond at Rappahannock Regional Jail.

King George Sheriff’s Office is requesting that anyone who witnessed the attempted abduction at Petco, or the incident on Caledon Rd. where Deputy Simmons was struck, please contact Sgt. K. A. Wharton at (540) 775-8498.
