VSP Investigating Crash Of Tractor Trailer Carrying Propane in Richmond County

On February 11, 2019 (Monday) at approximately, 6:06 a.m., the Virginia State Police responded to a single vehicle crash at History Land Hwy (Route 3) and Mulberry Road (Route 619).

The trooper’s preliminary investigation reveals that a 2019 Kenwork tractor hauling a tanker carrying approximately 10,000 pounds of liquid propane was traveling eastbound on Route 3 when the driver ran off road right, over corrected, and then overturning the vehicle.  At this time, there is no spillage of propane.  
 
The driver, Zachary R. Newman, 26, of Callao, Va., was wearing his seat belt and sustained minor injuries.  Newman was checked at the scene, but was not transported by ambulance to the hospital.  
 
Newman was charged with; Reckless driving, failure to maintain control. 
 
The roadway continues to remain closed for the cleanup process.  
 
Agencies that are assisting at the scene are Richmond County Sheriff’s office, Fire EMS, Dominion Energy, Verizon, and VDOT.  
 
The crash remains under investigation.
