VDOT HOT SPOTS May 19 – 25

VDOT will be suspending most road closures for the Memorial Day holiday from noon Friday, May 24, until noon Tuesday, May 28.

I-95 Northbound and Southbound
Exit 143 (Route 610/Garrisonville) to Exit 130 (Route 3/Fredericksburg)
Expect alternating single lane closures and shoulder closures on I-95 northbound and southbound between Exit 143 (Route 610/Garrisonville) in Stafford County to Exit 130 (Route 3) in Fredericksburg for multiple work zones for various construction activities for the Improve 95 projects, or for geotechnical boring work and utility marking for the future I-95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension project. A work zone may be two miles to five miles long. Overnight delays are possible. Use caution with crews and construction equipment in the median and along the shoulders. Be alert to trucks slowing down to enter or exit the median at various construction entrances throughout the work zone.
Interstate 95 Northbound

(Update)Monday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m. Crews will be working at various intersections to install flashing yellow arrows at several traffic signals throughout the Fredericksburg District to help drivers turn left safely against oncoming traffic. Be alert to flaggers in the work zone to direct drivers through the intersection. Virginia State Police will assist with traffic control. Expect brief delays.

Districtwide Pavement Marking Mobile Operation
Monday – Thursday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Friday, 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. Motorists should anticipate lane closures and possible delays at various locations while crews replace existing pavement markings. Motorists should expect slow moving construction equipment and delays near the mobile work zone. Motorists are encouraged to avoid crossing over freshly painted lines. The paint will be wet and may adhere to vehicle. The mobile work zone will periodically pull over to allow congestion to clear. A flagging crew may direct drivers in certain areas near the mobile work zone.

I-95 Northbound near Exit 140 (Route 630/Courthouse Road)
Tuesday, 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. Expect single alternating lane closures on I-95 southbound near Exit 140 for construction activities for the future diverging diamond interchange. All lanes will reopen by 4:30 Wednesday morning.
Route 17 near Fauquier County Line
Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. Expect alternating lane closures on Route 17 northbound and southbound near the Stafford County and Fauquier County line for bridge repairs near Hartlake Road and to improve signage at various crossovers.
Route 218 (White Oak Road)
Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Route 218 (White Oak Road) near Route 1348 (Brookstone Drive) to allow crews to repair and install guardrail. A flagging crew will direct drivers in the work zone. Delays are possible.
Route 630 (Courthouse Road) Fred Ex Work:
Monday – Friday, 10 p.m. – 5 a.m. Expect a mobile operation on Courthouse Road between Austin Ridge Drive and Route 1 for geotechnical boring work and utility marking for the future I-95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension project.
Route 630 (Courthouse Road) Widening Work:
Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.and Friday, 9 a.m. – 12 noon Expect brief delays with alternating, one-way traffic at the following locations:

Monday − Friday, 6 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Stay alert for mobile lane closures. Crews will perform routine maintenance activities at the following locations:

Spotsylvania County Work Zones
I-95 Southbound at Exit 118/Thornburg
Tuesday – Thursday,  9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Expect a single right lane to be closed on I-95 southbound near the Exit 118/Thornburg interchange for construction activities as part of the interchange improvement and overpass replacment project.
Route 606 (Mudd Tavern Road) and Mallard Road
Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. – 7 a.m. Friday, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Mudd Tavern Road and Mallard Road near the I-95 interchange for paving operations as part of the improvement interchange and Mudd Tavern overpass replacement project. Flaggers will direct drivers through the work zone.
Route 614 (Dickerson Road)
Thursday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect alternating lane closures on Route 614 (Dickerson Road) from Route 601 (Lawyers Road) to Route 657 (Edenton Road) for pavement repair. A flagging crew will alternate, one-way traffic through the work zone. Delays are possible.
Route 621 (Orange Plank Road)
Friday, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect alternating lane closures on Route 621 (Orange Plank Road) from the Spotsylvania County and Orange County line to Route 611 for pavement repair. A flagging crew will alternate, one-way traffic through the work zone.
Routine Maintenance
Monday − Friday, 6 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Stay alert for mobile lane closures. Crews will perform routine maintenance activities at the following locations:

Route 207 (Rogers Clark Boulevard)
Monday – Thursday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Friday, 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect a single lane closure on westbound Route 207 (Rogers Clark Boulevard) near Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) to allow crews to repair or install guardrail. A flagging crew will direct drivers in the work zone. Delays are possible.
Route 301 Northbound and Southbound
Monday – Thursday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Friday, 7 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect a single lane closure on Route 301 northbound and southbound at the bridge over Wilcox Drive (Fort A.P. Hill) for bridge repairs. The work zone is approximately two miles south of Port Royal.
Routine Maintenance
Monday − Friday, 6 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Stay alert for mobile lane closures. Crews will perform routine maintenance activities at the following locations:
  • Route 17 (Tidewater Trail) – vegetation control
  • Route 30 (Dawn Boulevard) – vegetation control
  • Route 301 (Richmond Turnpike) – vegetation control
  • Route 652 (Signboard Road) – vegetation control
Caroline County/King George County Work Zone
Monday – Thursday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Friday, 7 a.m. – 12 p.m. Traffic will be reduced to a single lane on Route 301 northbound and southbound near the James Madison Bridge over the Rappahannock River for a bridge maintenance project. Expect brief delays on the bridge and at the bridge approaches.
King and Queen County Work Zone
Route 33
Monday – Thursday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Friday, 7 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect alternating single lane closures on Route 33 near the end of the Lord Delaware Bridge and Route 643 (Airport Road) for milling and paving. Drivers may experience temporary rough pavement. Delays are possible.
Lancaster County Work Zones
Route 3 Paving near the Robert O. Norris Bridge
Sunday, May 19 – Monday, May 20, 6:30 p.m. – 5 a.m.  Crews will resume milling and paving Route 3 between Old Ferry Road and Blueberry Point Road in White Stone near the Norris Bridge. Route 3 will be reduced to a single lane in the work zone at these times, with one-way, alternating traffic. Motorists will be guided through the work zone by a flagging crew. Overnight delays are possible.
Route 600 (Courthouse Road)
Monday – Thursday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Crews will be resurfacing Route 600 (Courthouse Road). A flagging crew will guide motorists through the work zone.
Northumberland County Work Zones
Route 605 (Mount Olive Road)
Friday, 7 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect a flagging operation on Route 605 (Mount Olive Road) for surface treatment.
Route 610 (Sampsons Wharf Road)
Thursday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Crews will be placing stone along the shoulder on Route 610 (Sampsons Wharf Road) from Route 615 (Brown Store Road) to Route 642 (Knights Run Road). A flagging crew will alternate, one-way traffic through the work zone.
Westmoreland County Work Zones
Route 622 (Panorama Road)
Wednesday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Route 622 (Panorama Road) between Route 644 (Wild Sally Road) and Route 648 (Stratford Hall Road) for paving and to allow crews to add stone along the shoulder. A flagging crew will direct drivers in the work zone.
Other Fredericksburg District Projects
Middlesex County
·       Route 622 (Dirt Bridge Road): ROAD CLOSED
Dirt Bridge Road was closed between Route 3 (Greys Point Road) and Route 623 (Regent Road) on Thursday, April 4, for motorist safety after a drainage pipe failure. Emergency repair work underway. Road is anticipated to reopen on Wednesday, May 1.
Stafford County
·       Route 3 Business and Route 606 (Ferry Road) Intersection
Workis underway to improve this intersection. Motorists should be alert for construction activity on Route 3 Business and on Ferry Road between the CSX railroad crossing and Route 3 Business. For more information about the project, please visit the project page.
·       Route 608 (Brooke Road): ROAD CLOSED
Brooke Road is closed to through traffic near Eskimo Hill Road. This is a Stafford County project to realign the roadway to improve safety and drainage. The road will reopen by July 2019. For more information about the project and the detour route, please visit the county’s project page.
Spotsylvania County
·      Route 658 (Mount Olive Road) Bridge Replacement: ROAD CLOSED
Construction is underway to build a replacement bridge on Route 658 (Mount Olive Road) over the North Anna River, which will restore a connection between Hanover County and Spotsylvania County. The new bridge is estimated to open in summer 2019. Visit the project page for additional details.
Emergency Road Repairs: Tropical Storm Michael
Emergency repair work continues to rebuild several state-maintained roads that sustained severe damage during Tropical Storm Michael. These roads require major reconstruction or replacement of pipes and culverts before they can safely be reopened. Emergency procurement methods are being used to expedite repairs.
Estimated construction schedules for the remaining closed roads in Fredericksburg District are listed below:
King William County
·      Route 662 (Sharon Road): Anticipated to reopen in August 2019.Crews will reconstruct a slope near the road and repair the culvert.
Northumberland County
·       Route 201 (Courthouse Road): Anticipated to reopen in June 2019. Crews are replacing a damaged set of four 96-inch drainage pipes with a triple set of concrete box culverts, with each culvert measuring 12 feet by 10 feet. The new culverts arrived in early March, and crews are in the process of moving them into place.
·      Route 634 (Spring Road): Anticipated to reopen in August 2019.Crews are repairing the bridge and replacing a washed out section of road.
Westmoreland County
·      Route 600 (Nomini Grove Road): Anticipated to reopen in August 2019.Crews are repairing a void underneath the road and replacing a washed out section of road.
Motorists are reminded to adhere to all road closed signs and barricades, and to follow the posted detour route. Roads have been closed for traveler safety.
