WWER Radio Station to Serve Local Community

Colonial Beach Community Foundation Brings Local Radio to Small Town

At midnight on June 1, 2019, a small group of volunteers met at the Colonial Beach Chamber of Commerce offices to launch a new local radio station, WWER 88.1 FM. The radio station is supported, in part, by the Colonial Beach Community Foundation.

The station’s mission is, “to deliver programming that serves and supports Colonial Beach in ways that commercial stations do not, by broadcasting unique, local programs that inform and engage both residents and visitors.”

Station manager Ted Tait and Program Director Tom Larson have worked full time setting up equipment, raising funds, and building visibility. Both men, as well as several other volunteers, have spent countless hours introducing the station to the public. As Tait puts it, “We are thrilled to be bringing true community radio to the town, and glad to see so many people in Colonial Beach as excited about it as we are! We are off to a great start, and hope to do so much more.”

Station volunteers and supporters expect WWER–88.1 FM is a non-commercial, community radio station–to be the voice of Colonial Beach. Unlike commercial radio, WWER has a unique contribution to make to the town and its nearby residents. Programming on WWER will include music interspersed with interesting history and information; weather reports relevant to boaters and beach residents; and news stories from in and around Colonial Beach.
