Improve 95
Several projects are underway on the I-95 corridor near Fredericksburg. Drivers may encounter lane and shoulder closures or traffic shifts in these work zones. Each project is designed to unlock gridlock on Interstate 95 in Fredericksburg. Improve 95 projects include:
- Interstate 95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing
- Interstate 95 Northbound Rappahannock River Crossing
- I-95 Express Lanes – Fredericksburg Extension
- Exit 140 Diverging Diamond Interchange and Courthouse Road Widening
The following lane closures associated with these projects are planned for this week in Stafford County:
Interstate 95 Southbound
On Thursday all three lanes of I-95 southbound will be shifted slightly near the Truslow Road overpass. The Truslow Road overpass is located just north of Exit 133/Falmouth. New pavement markings and signs will be installed to guide motorists through the 1.25 mile lane shift.
Drivers can expect the following lane closures prior to the shift to allow crews to remove the existing lane markings and install new, temporary lane markings between mile marker 135 to 132:
Monday, July 8 and Tuesday, July 9
- 9 p.m. – 10 a.m. – Single lane closure
Wednesday, July 10
- 9 p.m. – Single lane closure
- 10 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. – Two lanes closed
- Around midnight on Thursday, July 11, traffic lanes will be shifted, and motorists can expect to begin traveling in the new pattern early Thursday morning.
- 4:30 a.m. – 10 a.m. – Single lane closure

Route 17
Monday – Tuesday, northbound and southbound drivers can expect a single lane closure on Route 17 at the I-95 interchange for bridge work during the following hours:
- Route 17 Northbound – 7 p.m. – 6 a.m.
- Route 17 Southbound – 8 p.m. – 7 a.m.

Route 630 (Courthouse Road)
Monday – Thursday, 8 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. and Friday, 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect brief delays with alternating, one-way traffic at the following locations:
- Courthouse Road between Cedar Lane to Walpole Street and Austin Ridge Drive to Red Oak Drive.
- Ramoth Church Road
- Snowbird Lane
- Winding Creek Road between Courthouse Road and Embrey Mill Road
- Woodcutters Road
- Wyche Road

Interstate 95 Northbound
Monday – Thursday, 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. Crews will pave overnight on I-95 northbound between mile markers 135 – 137 near Exit 136/Centreport Parkway. One lane will be closed in the work zone at 9 p.m. followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. each night.
Interstate 95 Southbound
Monday, 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. A single lane will be closed on I-95 southbound at mile marker 137 located just north of Exit 136/Centreport Parkway. Crews will be repairing bridge joints on the
I-95 bridge over Aquia Creek.
Route 17
Monday – Saturday, 7 a.m. – 7 30 p.m. A single lane closure will be in place on Route 17 between Hartlake Road and the Fauquier County line for bridge work.
American with Disabilities Act Ramp Repair
Monday ˗˗ Tuesday, 9 a.m. ˗˗ 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, 9 a.m. ˗˗ 12 p.m., Crews will repair sidewalk ramps and pedestrian crossings on these routes for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). There may be temporary, alternating shoulder closures or flagging operations with this work. Motorists should be alert to a mobile work zone with crews and construction equipment at the following intersections:
- I-95 Northbound Off-Ramp to Route 8900 (Centreport Parkway)
Single lane closure on the I-95 northbound off-ramp to Centreport
Parkway. Ramp to remain open.
- Route 1 Northbound between Cranes Corner Road and Potomac Creek Drive
- Route 1 Northbound near Route 624 (Layhill Road)
- Route 607 (Cool Springs Road) intersections with Route 3 Business and Route 212 (Chatham Heights Road)
- Route 607 (Cool Springs Road) intersections with Route 3 Business and Route 218 (White Oak Road)
Patriots Landing Subdivision
Monday – Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 7 p.m. Expect a mobile operation for pavement repair in the Patriots Landing subdivision. Work will begin on Route 610 (Garrisonville Road) near Brafferton Boulevard and move towards Willingham Court. After patching, workers will return to mill and pave. Motorists may experience a rough travel surface. A flagging crew will alternate one-way traffic in the work zone.
Spotsylvania County
Interstate 95
Tuesday – Thursday, 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. A single lane closure will be in place on I-95 northbound and southbound at mile marker 121 located between Exit 118/Thornburg and Exit 126/Spotsylvania. Crews will be repairing bridge joints on the I-95 bridge over the Ni River.
Route 639 (Leavells Road)
Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. crews will be installing guardrail on Route 639 at Massaponax Creek. Flaggers will direct drivers through the work zone.
Mineral Springs Subdivision
Monday – Friday, 6 a.m. – 6 p.m. Expect a mobile operation to allow crews to patch potholes on various routes in the Mineral Springs subdivision. After patching, workers will return at a later date to mill and pave. Motorists may experience a rough travel surface. A flagging crew will alternate one-way traffic in the work zone.
Caroline County
Route 301
Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. A single lane closure will be in place on Route 301 at various locations for guardrail installation.
Gloucester County
Route 641 (Tidemill Road)
Monday – Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 7 p.m.Expect alternating lane closures on Route 641 (Tidemill Road) at the bridge over Sarah Creek, which is located between Route 17 and Guinea Road, for bridge repairs. Delays are possible.
King George County
Resurfacing and Safety Improvement Project
Beginning Wednesday crews will begin a resurfacing and safety improvement project project that will result in a smoother travel surface on several high-volume roads, and reduce the risk of crashes at spot locations by adding centerline rumble strips and widening the road shoulders.
The project will begin at the following location:
Route 206 (Dahlgren Road)
Wednesday – Friday, 9 a.m.- 8 p.m. Drivers can expect one way, alternating traffic on Route 206 from Route 3 to Route 301.
Other locations will include:

Crews will work at only one location at a time and no work will take place between 5 a.m. – 9 a.m. at each location.
Message boards will be posted in advance to notify motorists of the work locations, dates and times. Boards will be moved as crews progress from one route to the next.
King and Queen County
Route 14
Wednesday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Expect a single lane closure on eastbound Route 14 from (Richmond/Tappahannock Highway) to Route 614 for removal of snow plowable pavement markers.
Route 14 Bridge Inspections
Monday and Tuesday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. A single lane closure will be in place at two locations on Route 14 for bridge inspections:
- Route 14 – Monday between Route 198 and Route 3
- Route 14 – Tuesday between the Gloucester County line and Mathews County line.
Lancaster County
Route 3
Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Expect a single lane closure on Route 3 westbound at Route 759 for guardrail installation. Flaggers will direct motorists through the work zone.
Middlesex County
Milling, Paving and Line-Striping
Motorists should anticipate lane closures and possible delays at various locations while crews mill, pave and replace existing pavement markings. Motorists should expect slow moving construction equipment and delays near the mobile work zone. Motorists are encouraged to avoid crossing over freshly painted lines. The paint will be wet and may adhere to vehicle. The mobile work zone will periodically pull over to allow congestion to clear. A flagging crew may direct drivers in certain areas near the mobile work zone.

Monday, 6 p.m. – 5:30 a.m. and Tuesday – Saturday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Route 17
Wednesday – Thursday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. A single lane closure will be in place on Route 17 northbound and southbound between the Middlesex County line and the Gloucester County line for a bridge inspection. Expect brief delays in the area.
Northumberland County
Surface Treatment
Monday – Thursday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Expect flagging operations at various locations on Route 627 and Route 614 for surface treatment.
Richmond County
Surface Treatment
Monday – Thursday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Expect flagging operations on various low-volume secondary routes throughout Richmond County, including Route 690 and Route 602, for surface treatment.
Westmoreland County
Route 202 (Cople Highway)
Sunday 7 p.m. – 7 a.m. and Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Motorists should anticipate lane closures and possible delays at various locations on Route 202 (Cople Highway) for milling, paving and line striping work. Stafford County
Route 3 Business and Route 606 (Ferry Road) Intersection
Workis underway to improve this intersection. Motorists should be alert for construction activity on Route 3 Business and on Ferry Road between the CSX railroad crossing and Route 3 Business. For more information about the project, please visit the project page.
Route 608 (Brooke Road): ROAD CLOSED
Brooke Road is closed to through traffic near Eskimo Hill Road. This is a Stafford County project to realign the roadway to improve safety and drainage. The road will reopen by July 2019. For more information about the project and the detour route, please visit the county’s project page.
Spotsylvania County
Route 658 (Mount Olive Road) Bridge Replacement: ROAD CLOSED
Construction is underway to build a replacement bridge on Route 658 (Mount Olive Road) over the North Anna River, which will restore a connection between Hanover County and Spotsylvania County. The new bridge is estimated to open in summer 2019. Visit the project page for additional details.
Emergency Road Repairs: Tropical Storm Michael
Emergency repair work continues to rebuild several state-maintained roads that sustained severe damage during Tropical Storm Michael. These roads require major reconstruction or replacement of pipes and culverts before they can safely be reopened. Emergency procurement methods are being used to expedite repairs.
Estimated construction schedules for the remaining closed roads in Fredericksburg District are listed below:
King William County
Route 662 (Sharon Road): Anticipated to reopen in August 2019.Crews will reconstruct a slope near the road and repair the culvert.
Northumberland County
Route 634 (Spring Road): Anticipated to reopen in August 2019.Crews are repairing the bridge and replacing a washed out section of road.
Westmoreland County
Route 600 (Nomini Grove Road): Anticipated to reopen in August 2019.Crews are repairing a void underneath the road and replacing a washed out section of road.
Motorists are reminded to adhere to all road closed signs and barricades, and to follow the posted detour route. Roads have been closed for traveler safety.
