Get Ready For the 2021 Potomac River Festival

The Potomac River Festival Will Go On June 11 – 13

By Linda Farneth

For years the town of Colonial Beach has celebrated the beginning of summer with the Potomac River Festival. As the years continued the schedule grew bigger and more events became a tradition.

The events kick off with the famous Firemen’s Parade, sponsored by the Colonial Beach Volunteer Fire Department. This event is heard across the river in Maryland and is famous for being one of the loudest parades. So bring ear plugs. The parade route usually has clearly marked quiet zones set up along the route. But a couple of balls of cotton or tissue will suffice in a pinch.

The parade begins at 7 p.m. On Friday June 11. The parade will begin on Colonial Ave with trucks entering at the intersection of Jackson Street. The parade will go down towards the water and turn left onto Washington Ave. The parade will then turn left onto Boundry Street and right onto Irving Ave.

The trucks will follow Irving to the end of the point and circle back along Monroe Bay Ave heading towards town.

At Boundry the parade will take right turn and then left back onto Washington Ave and finish with Colonial Ave.

Judging and awards will be conducted in the parking lot of the High School.

On Saturday morning festivities on the Hill will include crowning Ms. Colonial Beach who will be featured in the Grand Parade at noon. This parade will start with a sounding of the Colonial Beach Fire Department horn and will begin at the intersection of Jackson and Colonial Ave, and take a turn onto Washington. (More details of the parade route will follow as they are made available)

Back on Town Hill, there will be something for everyone including a Kids Zone, Beer & Wine Garden for the adults, Bands will play from 6-9 pm

The evening will wind down after fireworks, scheduled for 9:30 p.m.

Sunday morning is a little more relaxed with events such as Arts, Crafts & Food Vendors on the hill starting at 10am and running until 4pm.

There will be a Boat Parade on the Potomac River starting at Noon. Boats will enter the River at the mouth of Monroe Bay and travel along the shore to the North Side of Colonial Beach and Circle back at the area where Colonial Ave dead ends at the River.

A Pet Parade will take place on the Town Hill Stage at 2pm.

All current COVID guidelines will be followed.
