ROUTE 222 (WEEMS ROAD) IN LANCASTER COUNTY CLOSED WITH SINKHOLE

Crews on scene to determine cause, assess damage and plans for repair

 FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Route 222 (Weems Road) in Lancaster County is closed after a sinkhole formed in the roadway.

Crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) are on the scene to determine what caused the sinkhole, assess the damage and develop repair plans.

A re-opening date is not yet available.

Message boards are posted to alert drivers to the emergency closure.  Detour signs are also posted along the recommended detour, which is approximately a half mile:

  • Route 646 (Christ Church Road)
  • Route 709 (Gaskins Road)

According to a recent traffic count, approximately 1,500 vehicles a day travel Weems Road.
