COMMUTER TRAFFIC

SUNDAY NIGHT

Southbound traffic will be reduced to a single lane overnight at the Courthouse Road exit to allow crews to improve the clarity of travel lane markings in the work zone

Interstate 95 southbound travelers can expect overnight delays near Exit 140 (Courthouse Road) in Stafford County on Sunday, Dec. 16 for a mobile operation to improve pavement markings in the Exit 140 interchange work zone.

I-95 southbound will be reduced to a single lane beginning just south of Exit 143 (Garrisonville Road) in Stafford.

Sunday, Dec. 16: I-95 Southbound at Exit 140

  • 10 p.m. – Two I-95 southbound lanes close

  • 4:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 17 – All southbound lanes re-open

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and its contractor Shirley Contracting Company are rebuilding Exit 140 as a diverging diamond interchange. The new interchange will open to traffic by July 2020.

I-95 southbound traffic has been shifted slightly in the work zone to provide space for crews to build two new overpasses that will carry the future Courthouse Road.

Previous I-95 southbound lane markings were painted over with black paint. Temporary white lane markings were installed.

On Sunday evening, crews will mill up the previous lane markings to reduce sun glare reflecting off the black paint. This change will better define the proper travel lanes for motorists as they pass through the work zone.

After milling work is completed, motorists will notice a slightly rougher travel surface on I-95 southbound in the work zone.

Near the end of the project, I-95 will be repaved in the Exit 140 work zone. Final lane markings will also be applied.
