Improve 95
Multiple projects are underway to build a better ride on the I-95 corridor in the Fredericksburg region. Drivers may encounter lane closures, shoulder closures and traffic shifts in these work zones. Improve 95projects include:
- Interstate 95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing
- Interstate 95 Northbound Rappahannock River Crossing
- I-95 Express Lanes – Fredericksburg Extension
- Exit 140 Diverging Diamond Interchange and Courthouse Road Widening
The following lane closures associated with these projects are planned for next week in Stafford County:
Interstate 95 Southbound
Monday – Thursday, 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. and Friday, 10 p.m. – 7 a.m. Saturday. Major construction activities begin on Monday, July 22 for the I-95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension project. Drivers can expect a single left lane closure overnight on I-95 southbound between mile markers 134 – 136, which is located between Exit 136/Centreport Parkway and Exit 133/Falmouth. Crews will be installing work zone signs. All lanes will open by 4:30 a.m. the following morning, expect on Saturday, when all lanes reopen by 7 a.m.

Interstate 95 Northbound

Route 630 (Courthouse Road)
Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. and Friday, 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect brief delays with alternating, one-way traffic at the following locations:
- Courthouse Road between Cedar Lane to Walpole Street and Austin Ridge Drive to Red Oak Drive
- Ramoth Church Road
- Snowbird Lane
- Winding Creek Road between Courthouse Road and Embrey Mill Road
- Woodcutters Road
- Wyche Road

Stafford County
Interstate 95 Northbound
Monday – Thursday, 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. Crews will be milling and paving I-95 northbound between mile markers 135 and 137, near Exit 136/Centreport Parkway. One northbound lane will close at 9 p.m. followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. each night. All I-95 northbound lanes reopen by 4:30 a.m. the following morning.
Route 3 Eastbound and Westbound
Sunday – Wednesday, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Asphalt work will be underway on Route 3 eastbound and westbound between Cool Springs Road and the Blue and Gray Parkway.
Route 3 Eastbound
Tuesday – Wednesday, 8:30 a.m.– 2:30 p.m. Single eastbound lane closure on Route 3 between Cool Springs Road and Blue and Gray Parkway for grading and drainage work.
Route 17
Monday – Sunday, 7 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. A single lane closure will be in place on Route 17 between Hartlake Road and the Fauquier County line for bridge work.
American with Disabilities Act Ramp Repair
Crews will repair sidewalk ramps and pedestrian crossings on these routes for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). There may be temporary, alternating shoulder closures or flagging operations with this work. Motorists should be alert to a mobile work zone with crews and construction equipment at the following intersections:

- I-95 northbound exit ramp to Exit 136/Centreport Parkway)
- Route 1 northbound between Cranes Corner Road and Potomac Creek Drive

Flashing Yellow Arrow
Monday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m. Crews will install traffic signal equipment to display a flashing yellow arrow at the following intersections, along with high-visibility signal back plating. Expect mobile lane closures in the work zone at the following locations:
- Route 1 and Aquia Park entrance
- Route 1 and Route 637 (Telegraph Road)
- Route 1 and Corporate Drive
- Route 610 and Vulcan Quarry Road
- Route 610 and Route 643 (Joshua Road) and Route 1875 (Algrace Boulevard)
- Route 627 (Mountain View Road), Route 1209 (Choptank Road) and Mountain View High School entrance
- Route 627 (Mountain View Road) and Route 648 (Shelton Shop Road)
Patching, Paving, and Shoulder Work
Crews are patching, paving and placing shoulder stone at the following locations. Drivers should be alert for construction crews, equipment and one-way, alternating traffic directed by a flagging crew between 7:30 a.m – 7 p.m.
- Route 645 (Dunbar Road) – between Tacketts Mill Road and Rock Hill Church Road (Monday – Friday)
- Route 616 (Poplar Road) – between Hartwood Road and the Fauquier Road County line (Monday – Friday)
Spotsylvania County
Route 3 Eastbound
Sunday – Friday, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m. Single lane closure for milling and paving from just west of Route 626 (Andora Drive) to just west of Route 620 (Spotswood Furnace Road). All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.
Route 3 Westbound
Sunday – Friday, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m. Single lane closure for milling and paving. Work will take place from just west of Route 620 (Harrison Road) to just west of Route 620 (Spotswood Furnace Road). All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.
Route 208 Eastbound (Courthouse Road)
Tuesday, July 23 – Friday, July 26 and Sunday, July 28 – Thursday, Aug. 1
8 p.m. – 5 a.m. Single lane closure for milling and paving. Work will take place from the Route 208 bridge over Interstate 95 to just south of Route 1 (Jefferson Davis Highway) intersection. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.
Route 208 Westbound (Courthouse Road)
Tuesday, July 23 – Friday, July 26 and Sunday, July 28 – Thursday, Aug. 1,
8 p.m. – 5 a.m. Single lane closure for milling and paving. Work will take place from just south of Route 1 (Jefferson Davis Highway) intersection to the north end of the Route 208 bridge over Interstate 95. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.
Route 609 (Thornton Rolling Road)
Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Crews will be patching potholes and areas of asphalt deterioration between Route 17 and Patriot Lane. This work is occurring to prepare the road for paving in 2020 between Route 17 and the Caroline County line. A flagging crew will direct drivers through one-way, alternating traffic in the work zone.

Surface Treatment
Tuesday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Drivers should expect delays on Routes 658 (Jericho Road) and Route 721 (Newtown Road/Sparta Road) for surface treatment work. A flagging crew will direct one-way, alternating traffic through each work zone.
Essex County
Route 17 Southbound
Monday – Thursday, 8 p.m. – 7 a.m. Single lane closure for bridge joint repair work at Mt. Landing Creek, north of Tappahannock.
Gloucester County
Route 641 (Tidemill Road)
Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.Single lane closure on Route 641 (Tidemill Road) at the bridge over Sarah Creek, which is located between Route 17 and Guinea Road, for bridge repairs. One-way, alternating traffic.
King George County
Resurfacing and Safety Improvement Project
This resurfacing and safety improvement project will result in a smoother travel surface on several high-volume roads, and reduce the risk of crashes at spot locations by adding centerline rumble strips and widening the road shoulders. Crews will direct one-way, alternating traffic through each work zone, below:
Route 206 (Dahlgren Road), between Route 3 and Route 644 (Potts Lane)

King and Queen County
Route 14
Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Expect a single lane closure on Route 14 from Route 360 (Richmond Tappahannock Highway) to Route 614 (Devils Three Jump Road) for milling and paving work as part of a resurfacing project. Middlesex County
Route 3
Monday, 8 a.m. – noon. Expect delays on Route 3 between Route 33 and the Twigg Bridge as crews complete a pavement repair, following earlier resurfacing work in this area. Route 3 will be reduced to a single lane, with a flagging crew directing one-way, alternating traffic.
Line Striping
Motorists should anticipate lane closures and potential delays at various locations while crews apply fresh pavement markings. Motorists should expect slow-moving construction equipment and delays near this mobile work zone. Motorists are encouraged to avoid crossing over freshly painted lines. The paint will be wet and may adhere to vehicle. The mobile work zone will periodically pull over to allow congestion to clear.
Route 17 near Route 945 (Diesel Drive) and Route 17 Business intersection
Monday – Tuesday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m.
Route 17 Northbound Business between north and south intersections with Route 17 (Tidewater Trail)

Surface Treatment
Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Drivers should expect delays on multiple routes for surface treatment work, including routes 600, 605, 643, 677, 685, 717, 718, 720, 721 and 1009. A flagging crew will direct one-way, alternating traffic through each work zone.
Westmoreland County
Route 202 (Cople Highway)
Monday, 1 p.m. – 7 p.m. and Friday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Motorists should anticipate lane closures and possible delays at various locations on Route 202 (Cople Highway) for pavement repair on Monday, and installation of rumble strips on Friday.
Motorists will encounter slow-moving construction equipment and delays near this mobile work zone. Motorists are encouraged to avoid crossing over freshly painted lines. The paint will be wet and may adhere to vehicle. The mobile work zone will periodically pull over to allow congestion to clear. Stafford County
- Route 3 Business and Route 606 (Ferry Road) Intersection
Workis underway to improve this intersection. Motorists should be alert for construction activity on Route 3 Business and on Ferry Road between the CSX railroad crossing and Route 3 Business. For more information about the project, please visit the project page.
- Route 608 (Brooke Road): ROAD CLOSED
Brooke Road is closed to through traffic near Eskimo Hill Road. This is a Stafford County project to realign the roadway to improve safety and drainage. Recently, the county announced that Brooke Road will remain closed with a detour in place until late September 2019. King William County
- Route 662 (Sharon Road): ROAD CLOSED
Project schedule under development. Crews are repairing damage from Tropical Storm Michael. The project is reconstructing a slope near the road and replacing the culvert.
Spotsylvania County
- Route 658 (Mount Olive Road) Bridge Replacement: ROAD CLOSED
Construction is underway to build a replacement bridge on Route 658 (Mount Olive Road) over the North Anna River, which will restore a connection between Hanover County and Spotsylvania County. The new bridge is estimated to open in summer 2019. Visit the project page for additional details.
Motorists are reminded to adhere to all road closed signs and barricades, and to follow the posted detour route. Roads have been closed for traveler safety.
