Expect temporary traffic conditions and rough pavement in the work zone
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is encouraging drivers to use caution and follow signage on Route 3 near the Interstate 95 interchange in Fredericksburg with temporary traffic conditions and rough pavement as crews work to open the triple left turn lanes on Route 3 eastbound next week.
As part of the project to improve safety and operations at the I-95 Exit 130 interchange, crews will be opening triple left turns on Route 3 eastbound to access northbound I-95 and close the existing loop on-ramp before the morning peak travel period on Wednesday, Aug. 29, weather permitting.
Currently, drivers are experiencing temporary traffic conditions on Route 3 eastbound until traffic is in its final configuration next week. The triple left turn lanes will remain closed and the existing loop on-ramp will remain open until Wednesday morning. On Route 3 westbound, drivers are experiencing a temporary rough driving surface. Crews will be working for the next several weeks on milling and paving at various locations throughout the work zone, including Route 3 westbound, Carl D. Silver Parkway and the I-95 southbound slip ramp to Carl D. Silver Parkway.
Message boards and signage are posted to alert motorists to current conditions.
Next week, the new signal will be activated on flash mode early Monday, Aug. 27. The Route 3 westbound signal heads will flash yellow for the first 48 hours of operation to allow drivers to adjust to their presence. All signal heads will then be placed in full color operation before the morning peak travel period on Wednesday, Aug. 29.
The new traffic pattern is designed to make it safer for drivers to merge onto I-95 northbound with increased storage capacity on Route 3 eastbound and a longer acceleration lane on the interstate to merge with oncoming traffic.
