The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is cleaning and replacing bridge pins at two locations on Norris Bridge. A bridge inspection in October 2017 identified two pins for routine replacement due to corrosion from environmental exposure. The pins and the attached hangars help the bridge beams absorb the stress of vehicle traffic.
Since work began in October, two bridge pins have been thoroughly cleaned. Crews are moving to the second work location to clean one pin and attempt to remove and replace a second pin.
Traffic will be stopped at the bridge approaches, and northbound and southbound traffic will alternate crossing the bridge led by a pilot vehicle.
VDOT scheduled the work to be performed after a bridge painting project concluded in June 2018 and a milling and paving project was completed in Aug. 2018. This maintenance project is anticipated to be completed in November 2018.
