Interstate 95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing Project
Interstate 95 – Northbound and Southbound
Expect a single lane closure between mile marker 129, which is near Exit 130 (Route 3) and Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway).
- Monday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. and Friday, 10 p.m. – 5 a.m. Saturday – single lane closure on I-95 northbound
- Monday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 10 a.m. and Friday, 10 p.m. – 5 a.m. Saturday – single lane closure I-95 southbound
Route 17 – Northbound (24-hour closure)
Be alert to the 24-hour closure of a single right lane on Route 17 northbound between Sanford Drive and Short Street for construction activities related to the project. The 24-hour closure is needed to allow crews to work safely with construction equipment near the on- and off-ramps, travel lanes and underneath the I-95 overpasses.
Interstate 95 (Exit 140/Courthouse Road)
I-95 Southbound Off-Ramp at Exit 140 (Courthouse Road)
Monday – Thursday, 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. and Friday, 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect a narrowing of the off-ramp from I-95 southbound to Courthouse Road for construction activities.
Courthouse Road Widening Work
Monday – Thursday, 9 – 2:30 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect brief delays with alternating, one-way traffic at the following locations:
- Courthouse Road between Cedar Lane to Walpole Street and Austin Ridge Drive to Red Oak Drive.
- Ramoth Church Road
- Snowbird Lane
- Winding Creek Road
- Woodcutters Road
- Wyche Road
A flagging crew will direct drivers in each work zone.
Interstate 95 at Exit 118/Mudd Tavern Road Widening and Bridge Replacement Project
Interstate 95 Northbound
(Update) Monday – Wednesday, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. A single right lane will be closed on I-95 northbound as crews continue to demolish the former Mudd Tavern Road bridge.
(New) Wednesday, 9:30 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. Expect alternating double lane closures on I-95 northbound overnight for demolition work. All lanes will reopen at 4:30 a.m. Thursday.
Interstate 95 Southbound
(New) Wednesday, 10 p.m. – 5 a.m. Expect alternating double lane closures on I-95 southbound. All lanes will reopen at 5 a.m. Thursday.
Mudd Tavern Road and Mallard Road
Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Mudd Tavern Road and Mallard Road near the interchange for construction. Flaggers will direct drivers through the work zone.
Stafford County Work Zones
Route 3 Eastbound
A single lane is closed on Route 3 eastbound between Leonard Road and James Ashby Parkway for a Stafford County utility project. The lane closure will remain for the duration of the project.
Route 8900 (Centreport Parkway)
(New) Monday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Expect a mobile operation on Centreport Parkway between Route 1 and the I-95 southbound on- and off-ramps for pavement work. Delays are possible.
Routine Maintenance
Monday – Friday, 6 a.m. – 4 p.m. Stay alert for mobile lane closures. Crews will perform routine maintenance activities at the following locations:
- Route 1 (Jefferson Davis Highway) – shoulder repairs
- Route 604 (Belle Plains Road) – vegetation control
- Route 608 (Andrew Chapel Road) – ditch cleaning
Spotsylvania County Work Zones
Route 1 (Jefferson Davis Highway)
(New) Sunday – Thursday, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Expect alternating lane closures on Route 1 northbound and southbound at the I-95 overpasses for bridge repairs.
Route 208 (Courthouse Road)
(New) Tuesday – Wednesday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Expect a mobile operation on Route 208 (Courthouse Road) between Route 601 and Route 793 for pavement work. Delays are possible.
Routine Maintenance
Monday – Friday, 6 a.m. – 4 p.m. Stay alert for mobile lane closures. Crews will perform routine maintenance activities at the following locations:
- Route 208 (Courthouse Road) – vegetation control
- Route 608 (West Catharpin Road) – ditch cleaning
- Route 620 (Spotswood Furnace Road) – pavement repairs
- Route 621 (Orange Plank Road) – pavement repairs and ditch cleaning
- Route 649 (Seays Road) – pavement repairs
Caroline County Work Zones
Route 1 (Jefferson Davis Highway)
(Update) Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Expect alternating lane closures on Route 1 in Caroline County near the Spotsylvania County line to the Hanover County line to allow crews to install center line rumble strips. Expect brief delays at various locations with the mobile operation.
Route 2/Route 301
(New) Wednesday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Expect a mobile operation on Route 2/301 at the end of the four-lane section and Route 656 for pavement work. Delays are possible.
Route 30 (Dawn Boulevard)
(Update) Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Expect alternating lane closures on Route 30 in Caroline County near the King William County line to allow crews to install center line rumble strips. Expect brief delays at various locations with the mobile operation.
Routine Maintenance
Monday – Friday, 6 a.m. – 4 p.m. Stay alert for mobile lane closures. Crews will perform routine maintenance activities at the following locations:
- Route 2 (Fredericksburg Turnpike) – tree removal
- Route 301 (A.P. Hill Boulevard) – tree removal

Route 301 at Rappahannock River (James Madison Bridge)
Monday − Friday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Traffic will be reduced to a single lane on Route 301 northbound and southbound near the James Madison Bridge over the Rappahannock River for a bridge maintenance project. Expect brief delays on the bridge and at the bridge approaches.
Essex County and Richmond County Work Zones
Route 360 at the Downing Bridge
(Update) Monday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on the Downing Bridge over the Rappahannock River for bridge repairs. Automatic flagging devices will be placed near the center span of the bridge to control traffic. Expect overnight delays.
Gloucester County Work Zones
Route 3/Route 14
(New) Monday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Expect a mobile operation on Route 14/Route 3 near Main Street and Route 604 for pavement work. Delays are possible.
Route 17 at Guinea Road
(New) Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Expect alternating lane closures on Route 17 near Guinea Road and Ernest Lane for traffic signal installation. Delays are possible.
Route 33 at Rappahannock Community College
Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Expect a single lane and shoulder closures on Route 33 near the Rappahannock Community College campus. Construction is underway to extend the existing turn lanes and taper the area.
King William County Work Zone
Route 30
(Update) Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Expect alternating lane closures on Route 30 in King William County near the Caroline County line to allow crews to install center line rumble strips. Expect brief delays at various locations with the mobile operation.
Lancaster and Middlesex County Work Zone
Robert O. Norris Bridge
(New) Tuesday – Wednesday, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Route 3 at the bridge approaches to the Robert O. Norris Bridge over the Rappahannock River. Crews will be performing maintenance on the 511Virginia traffic cameras.
Other Fredericksburg District Projects
Stafford County
- Route 608 (Brooke Road) CLOSED for Stafford County Project
Brooke Road is closed near Eskimo Hill Road. This is a Stafford County project to realign the roadway to improve safety and drainage. The road will remain closed until January 2019. For more information about the project and the detour route, please visit the county’s project page.
Spotsylvania County
- Route 658 (Mount Olive Road) Bridge Replacement – Road CLOSED
